Flying Embers

Born from the story of perseverance and transformation, Flying Embers started with the Thomas fire of 2017 in Ojai, California. While firefighters battled to protect the town, workers did everything they could to save the brewery that they only barely started.

Flying Embers is trying to do something new and unique by providing a healthier drinking alternative. Beers produced with live probiotics and hard kombuchas brewed with fresh, all organic root extracts.

Shown are the many can and brand concepts through the course of the project.

Early designs were focused on botanicals and the unique ingredients of the brews, before shifting focus to a phoenix-rising metaphor of transformation.

Although a phoenix is the perfect symbol for this type of story, we were also inspired by a red-tailed hawk that lived and watched over the brewery. This led to many, many studies of the bird icon.

With a hop-inspired tail and fire-red heart, the final bird icon became known as the Ember.

For the brews themselves, marbling artwork was sourced from a local artist to speak to the magic of the brewing process, as well as custom botanical art by Kate O’Hara for the Kombucha line.
